Camp Contents
AMSP Summer Camp has three major components: classes, entertainments, and field trips.
Each day, there are 5-6 hours of intensive math, and computer science classes. Math and computer science classes on advanced topics provides challenging environment for students. Lectures are given by Accord Institute’s AMSP team, guest lecturers who are former International Math and Science Olympiad medalists, and middle school teachers. Every day, one hour is devoted to group study time after classes. There are comprehensive exams to follow up student progress and placement throughout the camp. Outstanding guest speakers are invited to stimulate the curiosity and enthusiasm of the students: Richard Rusczyk (author of Art of Problem Solving books) and Nuh Gedik (a professor at MIT physics department) are among guest speakers who honored AMSP National Camps in the past. After the lectures, students relax with puzzles, games, and tricky questions that encourage interaction and improve their mental and logical capabilities.
In AMSP camps, entertainments are carefully selected, and have five different types that contribute to student improvement:
- Strategy, board, and math games to improve analytical reasoning, visual perception, and logical deduction
- Movies that are educational, instructional and motivating
- Sport activities to improve the team spirit and to motivate challenge
- Math and science oriented team competitions
- Short slideshows or clips as math entertainments (ex. The Art of M.C. Escher, Fractals)
As Accord Institute, we believe that students need to relax after condensed lectures. At the end of the camp, one day is devoted to an entertainment or science field trip to locations like Universal Studios, SeaWorld, Biosphere-2 or NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
