AMSP Winter Camp-highlights in two locations
Post date: Jan 18, 2010
This year AMSP Winter Camp was held at two locations, Chandler, Arizona and Sacramento, California between 12/18/2009 and 12/23/2009. Around 120 students and 25 teachers participated in the camps from five states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. This advanced camp hosted a large spectrum of students in terms of academic levels - from beginner to national levels, targeting MathCounts and American Mathematics Competition Series.
Some of the highlights of the camps are:
Every day, there were four hours of math lectures and one hour of computer science lecture taught by Accord Institute’s AMSP staff and the member school teachers.
In the evenings, broad number of individual and house competitions and games (such as MathCounts, Mind Jeopardy and Bridge Building) were very inspiring for developing team spirit.
Laser Tag Game in Stratum (World's Largest Technotainment Laser Tag Arena and Entertainment Center) was one of the great entertainment and team activity of the AZ campus. A motivational science trip was organized to Mars and Space Center of Arizona State University. San Francisco field trip of CA campus was composed of Exploratorium, Pier39 and Golden Gate Bridge.
Dr. Saif Islam, an outstanding nanotechnology professor at UC Davis, Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, honored the CA campus as the guest speaker. He gave an interactive talk on “Nuts & Bolts of Electrical and Computer Engineering” providing daily life examples.
End-of-camp slideshow was presented, and students were awarded in different categories in both campuses.
